Sacred Spice Story: Christianity and Cinnamon

The Sacred Story of a Spice

God commanded Moses to use cinnamon in the holy anointing oil. But why would this be? What relation does this spice have to the sacred? What can the aroma of cinnamon tell us about our own lives?

Interesting…just how did you decide to write about this…anyhow, I was just thinking the other day that I thought about praying over an ill friend and didn’t even know what went into “holy oil”…you have prompted me to research this and I love cinnaman, ha! I will never think of it the same again. Thanks!

So glad you enjoyed it, Tom! Thank you for your comment!

I am taking a course in Traditional Eastern and Western medicine, and I wanted to trace the link of cinnamon to the sacred. There is certainly a connection between health, holiness and cleanliness (hence the phrase “cleanliness is next to godliness”). It’s definitely a fascinating topic!

“I will never think of it the same again…” I actually said the exact same words to a friend yesterday at church! Great minds think alike!

I love cinnamon too, so now I can see it as a sacred, sweet treat!!

Thank you again, and God bless!

This was WONDERFUL, Caroline! I learned so much from this and honestly did not remember that cinnamon was directly requested from God! That means it truly is a special spice! I love the explanation of sweet and spicy and you found so many wonderful old pictures and documents! I’d give you an A+++! :)

Caroline, this was so intriguing. I hadn’t even remembered this was in scripture. I love cinnamon and have heard about its benefits for health; I use lots of it. Now I feel even better about it, realizing its connection to the sacred! Your video was beautifully done, too. So nice to hear your voice, too! :-)

I also love cinnamon and use plenty of it.

Isn’t it uplifting to know that it not only tastes / smells wonderful and has healing qualities…but also has spiritual undertones too?

Praise God for His many wonderful gifts!
Indeed He is the Giver of sugar, spice and everything nice!

May God continue to bless you and your beautiful family!! :)

Absolutely beautifully done, Caroline! Cinnamon is definitely a foundational spice in my practice – the health benefits are numerous as you shared! I knew it was included in the anointing oil – but I truly loved your explanation of its relation to our faith. Beautiful!
